| Mentoring 101: Building Effective Mentoring Partnerships
The purpose of this one-day workshop is to present the basic skills and tools to develop, engage and conclude an effective mentoring partnership.
Anticipated Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this interactive workshop participants will be able to:
- describe the value of participating in a formal mentoring relationship and identify the benefits of mentoring to the mentor, partner, and organization;
- conduct a personal self-assessment to determine readiness for a mentoring relationship;
- outline various methods to engage in mentoring and use strategies to implement in a partnership;
- describe fundamental mentoring functions, roles, and responsibilities;
- identify the stages of a mentoring partnership and use the skills associated with each stage;
- facilitate mentoring conversations using power questions, active listening, and coaching and feedback skills;
- understand the potential barriers and challenges associated with mentoring and implement strategies to reduce or eliminate their impact; and
- recognize generational and gender differences associated with mentoring and recommend practice or strategy to build effective mentoring relationships across generations and across genders.
Workshop Format
Participants are organized into pairs and small groups for the practical training and consultation activities. Each participant will be asked to partner with another workshop participant to engage in a real-time mentoring interaction. The workshop relies strongly on interactive methods designed to maximize adult learning and model effective training.
Participants will be involved in lectures, communication skill exercises, role plays, training leadership opportunities, curriculum development, peer mentoring, and other experiential activities.
Target Audience
Persons who expect to be involved in a formal mentoring relationship either as a mentor, a partner or mentor program leader with other adults.
Pre-requisites
Discussion with employer or supervisor regarding expectations for the workshop and arrangement for a plan to report back.
Credit and Certification
Participants who attend a complete workshop will receive a Certificate of Completion. Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credit is also available through the Canadian Counselling Association.
